There are definitely too many pre-season games played abroad. There is no need for it, it's just about the money, as usual. The expanded European competition is a joke, to be honest. There was nothing wrong with the four-teams-in-a-group format for the Champions League. The Premier League could reduce to 18 teams, but, again, that won't happen. And the League Cup could just be for the non-Premier League clubs. Just my thoughts.

Tim: Sorry Ian (12:59) - that logic doesn't work. There is no rule on having to play any specific player, but all football is about competing to win. Clubs select the best players they can afford to produce and buy to do so. If they don't play those players they are less likely to win games, and if you make that a deliberate choice then you end up with fans losing interest because they are not doing everything they can to win, clubs losing their position in leagues, and it kicks off a downward spiral. Plus, most clubs cannot simply afford to buy bigger squads and pay the going wages to give players more time off. The answer is reducing the number of competitions clubs are forced to take part in.

James: Ian is correct. I work a full-time job - that doesn't mean that I'm there every day or for everything that happens. There's a wider team and people have days off for a reason. If that wasn't meant to be the case, teams would have squads of 11 players rather than the dozens, perhaps hundreds, that they actually do at all levels.

What’s the risk of too many football games? Forget injuries, people will just become bored. Take a look at cricket. International cricket players often spend months away from home, resulting in meaningless fixtures against other countries to generate revenue. Nowadays, England cricket games (aside from the Ashes) are treated like friendlies by fans. Even the World Cup to some extent is not something people care about too much. Nothing is exciting when it happens all the time. And I’m a cricket fan!

The main issue for me is the lack of coherence between decisions. FA Cup replays get scrapped but then other competitions like the Champions League and World Cup are expanded. It seems to be a money-grabbing exercise and there needs to be accountability taken for it. Make it make sense!

Chelsea supporter - loads of nice names coming in but we seriously need to start selling. We have already used two of six slots for loans while we still have Broja, Chalobah, Washington etc in the squad alongside Datro Fofana, who is not favoured. 13:47 23 July

    Manchester United

On the latest episode of The Devils' Advocate podcast, BBC Radio Manchester's Gaz Drinkwater ponders the future of Casemiro:

"It looks like he's going to stay but I don't think he should be playing every week. It was so obvious, especially towards the end of last season, that he was shattered.

"If he wants to come in every now and then, I'm all for it so he can keep his legs [fresh] but I'd rather him be replaced. Manuel Ugarte [who United have been linked to] is a defensive midfielder and I think we'll go and get him. I've got real confidence in this new set-up where we are linked to players and then we go and actually get them.

"If Casemiro can play half of the games that he did last season then we might actually get more out of him because he's not going to be shattered.

On Sofyan Amrabat, who was on loan at United last season, Drinkwater added: "I want to keep him because of the money it's going to take to get someone else."

I’ve said it before, in the old days squads were small and there were no substitutions. Now everyone has 30+ players and five substitutes a game, surely it is just about managing resources better? Sir Alex Ferguson was a master of choosing when he needed Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs and when he thought Darren Fletcher and John O’Shea could fill in when they were younger.
