Environmental Monitoring Program in Broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. Italica) Packing Plant Guanajuato, Mexico

2023 •

ScienceVolks Open Access

The state of Guanajuato in Mexico is known for its large production of vegetables not only for the local and national market, but also for the international market, especially the North American market, to which it exports mainly species such as broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. Italica), among other products. In this sense, one of the organizations located in the municipality of Dolores Hidalgo, C. I. N., in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico, has a safety management system in accordance with the PrimusGFS system guidelines, which is recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) and is therefore recognized worldwide (GFSI, 2022). Within this food safety scheme, a microbiological environmental monitoring program is required as a preventive control to avoid contamination of pathogenic microorganisms to the product from surfaces in direct contact as well as those that are not in direct contact but are part of the production environment. In environmental microbiological assessment, the zone concept is widely used and represents the basis for assessments accepted by international public health and food microbiology bodies such as the International Commission on Microbiological Specifications for Foods, ICMSF.

001 Establishment of Methods in Evaluating the Susceptibility of Chinese Cabbage (Brassica campestris spp.) to Soft Rot Disease by Erwinia

1999 •

Jongkee Kim

Three inoculation methods, including cutting of a leaf, drenching, and point inoculation, were compared in an effort to screen the susceptibility of Chinese cabbage to soft rot disease caused by Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora. Three- to 4-week-old seedlings from 10 lines of cabbage with 16-h-old bacterial culture were routinely used. Inoculated seedlings were kept at 25.0 ± 10.0 °C for 48 h with saturated water vapor using a plastic tunnel in a greenhouse. Sixty-day-old mature plants were produced and inoculated in a greenhouse. Severity of symptoms, which were observed from percentage of plant infected was scored as from 1 to 9, representing resistant to susceptible, respectively. The correlation between seedlings and mature plants from ten lines was evaluated among the three different inoculation methods. Point inoculation gave the most significant correlation (r = 0.843, P < 0.05) between seedlings and mature plants. A good correlation was also observed between point ino...

636 Introduction to the Organic Horticulture Colloquium

1999 •

Milton McGiffen

Consumption and production of organic food has quadrupled since 1990. Certified organic or pesticide-free produce and other foods are common in most grocery chains. Increased consumer demand and concerns about pesticide use has led to mandates for national standards and local implementation. The Organic Horticulture Colloquium addresses organic certification, production, pest management, consumer demand, education, marketing, and economics. Challenges and results in implementing policy and encouraging change will be related from both national and local perspectives. While the “organic movement” was originally focused on food crops, it has evolved to address issues of pesticide use in non-food horticultural crops as well. This colloquium addresses issues of concern to food and non-food agricultural products.

Screening Cabbage Cultivars for Resistance to Black Rot under Field Conditions

2020 •

Bhabesh Dutta

The use of resistant cultivars against Xanthom*onas campestris pv. campestris (Xcc) is considered a critical management practice for black rot (BR) management in cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata). Although most studies that have evaluated resistance to BR were conducted in greenhouses without accounting for yield, there is a clear need to investigate cultivar performance under field conditions. The objectives of this study were to evaluate commercial cabbage cultivars for resistance to BR and determine yield and head quality under field conditions. Field experiments with eight cultivars (Acclaim, Bravo, Capture, Celebrate, Cheers, Melissa, Monterey, and TCA-549) were conducted in two cabbage growing seasons, Fall 2018 and Spring 2019. Fields were spray-inoculated with Xcc (3 × 105 cfu/mL) at 35 and 49 days after transplanting in Fall 2018 and Spring 2019, respectively. Cabbage BR severity was evaluated at weekly intervals starting from 7 days postinoculation (DPI) until harve...

Production of Certified Tomatoes, Peppers and Eggplants with Reference to Existing Legislation

Global Science Books

There are two basic forms of certified produce of the Solanaceae (tomato, pepper and eggplant): (1) certified produce from sustainable management, and (2) produce grown by organic cultivation methods. In the first part of this review, the certification agencies, the rules and certification procedures are presented. In the second part, recent research relating to the maintenance of soil fertility for the production of certified produce is presented. Composts derived from various organic and waste materials are described and evaluated with particular reference to organically grown tomatoes, peppers and eggplants. Finally, the quality and safety of organic produce is briefly discussed.
